RESIDENT TECHNICIAN’S NOTES
In 2007 the Dwelling for Intervals hit the road as a para-site hosted by ex-residents and galleries in Europe, Canada and Japan. As a way to further explore and physically push concepts about geography, culture, citizenship, and collaboration vs. technical assistance, I created a roving version of the International Residency and forest. First I invited all previous residents to email me an image of a tree from their current environment, then I took these trees out of their contexts and put each on a white background and printed and sewed a flag. This forest of flags would be used to temporarily stake claim to land at each site that Knock on Woods would travel. Next I made a tent, using a photographic image of the cabin in This Neck of the Woods, to be erected each time in my protective forest of tree-flags. Then the Dwelling for Intervals went on the road offering itself up for residencies to local and international artists, continuing the tradition of the previous two incarnations while creating a very new situation for artists and 'the resident technician' to respond to. With each installation the Knock on Woods para-site would be subject to the wiles of a different host in a different geography with a different political atmosphere. |
